ichael has taught at Lanier Middle School for the past eighteen years, cycling,
through English, Reading, Creative Writing, Drama, and Journalism before settling
into a course called Media 2000 which incorporates elements of all his previous
subjects--and a few others as well. It is a Web and print media class which
produces Lanier's Web pages,
the school's monthly newspaper, and their yearly literarly magazine, as well as
numerous online projects. He understands the name Media 2000 will be due for an overhaul
soon, and is open to suggestions.
In his spare time last year, Michael did the HTML for an online version of a Texas
History book called A Shared Experience.
His students spent part of the spring creating materials which will enhance the material
in the book, and which will be linked to the book soon. Students using the book with
their school's Interent connections will be able to expand on the book's material by
accessing information created by ohter students, and even contribute their own materials if they
wish. Projects like these help him realize that the Internet is full of wide-open
possibilities for students and teachers to grow and collaborate in ways which will
greatly alter the nature of learning.
