Discovering Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt:
A Web-based social studies lesson for grades 5-8
 
Required Internet skills: Minimal
 
Objectives: After students gather research using the referenced Internet sites, information will be incorporated into a travel poster or HyperStudio project and presented to the class.
 
Time: 2-5 Days
 
Using the Cairo site's Visitor Guide, and the site on Alexandria, and similar Web sites provided by the teacher, students will answer the following questions in preparation for their travel poster and oral presentation.
 
Cairo:
 
What is one of Cairo's nicknames?
 
What is located on Cairo's east side? On its west side?
 
Which of the surviving seven wonders of the world is in Egypt?
 
What is one modern attraction for visitors to see? Describe the attraction and why it might be an important one.
 
Under "How to Reach Cairo," find the name of the train that travels throughout the city.
 
Under "Where to Eat," find the name of a restaurant that serves traditional Egyptian food. What might be included in a traditional Egyptian meal?
 
Under "Foreign Embassies," find the phone number of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Why might you need this number?
 
Under "Currency Exchange," find out what an Egyptian pound is approximately worth in U.S. dollars. Read this section carefully!
 
Alexandria:
 
The city of Alexandria was built by whom? In honor of whom?
 
Alexandria is the site of which one of the seven wonders of the world?
 
Alexandria is linked to Cairo by what?
 
Why is Alexandria one of the most notable summer resorts?
 
Under General Information in the Visitor Guide, find out how you would dress when traveling to churches or mosques. Also find three food specialties that would be served in Egyptian restaurants.
 
Under How to Reach, find out what airline you would take if you wanted a daily flight from Cairo to Alexandria.
 
Under What to see, name the granite pillar that is over 25 meters high.
 
Describe the Catacombs of Kom al-shoqafa.
 
Describe the Antoniadis Gardens and the Zoo.
 
Under Where to stay, name a five star hotel in Alexandria. What is a five star hotel?
 
Under where to eat, name two places where you could find excellent seafood in Alexandria.
 
Under Traditional food, tell which two restaurants serve falafel. What is falafel?
 
Use the remainder of your research time to find reasons to travel to Egypt.
